The Revista Latinoamericana de Población (RELAP) is a continuous publication, of academic nature, published by the Latin American Population Association to disseminate results of research on demography and population studies, including spaces for debate about the discipline and population problems of the region. Before sending a manuscript for consideration to RELAP, we ask that you verify that its content conforms to the stated objectives. Manuscripts that do not adhere to these issues may be rejected without evaluation.
The RELAP accepts for publication the following types of manuscripts:
- Articles or original or academic papers: must be original research papers, theoretical, methodological or empirical scope, with adequate theoretical or analytical development. The paper must follow the usual format of specialized scientific journals. Thus, it must contain: summary, title, keywords, introduction, objectives, data source description, methods, analysis, presentation of results, discussion, conclusions and implications, and bibliography. Each article may have a maximum of five authors.
- Book reviews: work that analyzes editorial novelties of academic and scientific interest in the population area. It is important that it is not mere summaries of the content of a book, but that the author proposes a critical review of the contents of the work, highlighting the fundamental contributions and deficiencies of the same. Review written by one of the authors is not accepted.
- Scientific literature review articles: original work of systematic review of the literature published around a research topic, which provides a critical and objective evaluation of the literature reviewed. It should clearly state the purpose of the review and the selection procedure of the reviewed literature.
The RELAP will also publish the following types of works only on its web page, but not as part of any issue:
a. Demographic Connections: interviews or short dialogues between demographers and / or population studies researchers, in which reflections are raised around one or several demographic topics, as well as an approach to the personal history of the interviewed people or participants.
b. Tributes: texts aimed at recognizing the work or activity of a demographer or population studies researchers of the population written by a third party.
c. Thesis and dissertations news: references to thesis and dissertations on population studies or demography, carried out in Latin American institutions, defended over the course of each year in Latin American academic institutions.
These last three types of works will usually be organized and requested by the editor of RELAP, although contributions submitted spontaneously may also be considered.
The scientific process
Manuscripts received for publication as articles will be reviewed firstly with plagiarism detection tools. Upon receipt of the manuscripts, it will be verified that the submission comply with the requirements established in the section “Characteristics of contributions”. Subsequently, it will be subject to blind pre-evaluations by the Editorial Committee and, if it is recommend to have a review, it will be send to a double-blind opinion by peer evaluators, who are experts in the subject addressed in the manuscript, and are from outside the institution responsible for the journal edition, keeping at all times the anonymity of both the authors and the evaluators. The results of the evaluation can be: a) publishable in its current version; b) publishable with minor modifications; c) publishable with major modifications; and d) not publishable. In cases where modifications are required, they will be requested from the authors, and the manuscript will be forwarded to the evaluators for reconsideration when the manuscript requires major modifications. In case of controversy, the manuscript will be sent to a third evaluator and the decision will be taken according to the majority criteria. Any other issue will be resolved by the RELAP Editorial Committee. If two opinions are positive and the manuscript is considered already publishable by the Editorial Committee, it will be subject to style correction and will be edited according to the editorial criteria of RELAP. The evaluation results will be communicated to the authors as soon as possible.
The sending author or sender will be the recipient of all communications issued by RELAP related to the submission. This person will be responsible, in case of multiple authorship, to contact co-authors and to provide the necessary information about them, being responsible for possible conflicts over the authorship of the manuscript. If there is need to change the author of the communications, it must be explicitly requested.
Any matter or situation not considered in this guideline will be resolved by the Editorial Committee of the Journal.
The authors will retain their rights and will guarantee the right of first publication of their work to the The Revista Latinoamericana de Población (RELAP), this will be simultaneously subject to the Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0), which allows third parties to share the work whenever indicate its authorship and the first publication in this journal.
Characteristics of contributions
The manuscripts that are submitted for publication as research articles must have the following characteristics:
- Must be unpublished and the result of research in some of the journal’s thematic areas of interest. Besides being unpublished, cannot be submitted for simultaneous evaluation to another journal for a minimum period of five months after submission. in At most two months after submission, RELAP’s editor will notify the authors if the manuscript was not pre-approved by the Editorial Committee to go to the next step of double-blind review. In case of a positive pre-approval, there will be no notification to the authors until all evaluations are available, allowing for a decision, which could take up to three more months. RELAP will communicate to the corresponding author the editorial decision about the manuscript, based on the reviews, upon availability.
- The originality form must be attached to the submission, duly signed by the authors. In the event that any version or part of the manuscript has been made public previously (in a thesis or in a conference, for example) it is necessary to point it out from the beginning of the article.
- The paper may be submitted, for evaluation, in Spanish, Portuguese or English. The journal will publish the article in the original language received.
- The title of the paper must be in the submitted language and also in English (or in English and Spanish, if written in English). It is recommended that it does not exceed 25 words. RELAP reserves the right to make adjustments if needed.
- The paper must include an abstract of no more than 150 words in the original submitted language and also versions in Spanish and English. The abstract should clearly state the main objective of the study, methodology, main findings and the most relevant conclusions, as well as highlight the new and important aspects of the study.
- After the abstract, keywords must be included (4 to 8) in the original submission language and also in Spanish and English.
- Following the keywords, the text of the proposed manuscript will be included, which will have a maximum length according to the section for which it is sent:
- The “articles” will have a maximum length of 10,000 words, including title, abstracts, keywords, tables, bibliography and footnotes.
- “Book reviews” will have a maximum length of 4,000 words. They must include the book citation, including authorship, title, editorial, place and date of publication, as well as the name, surname and contact address of the review authors.
- “Demographic connections” will have a maximum length of 4,000 words.
- The “tributes” will have a maximum length of 4,000 words.
- The citations and bibliographical references of the manuscripts must follow the style of the American PsychologicalAssociation (APA), sixth edition .
- Only references cited in the text should appear in the bibliography, arranged alphabetically (at the end of the text), in a section that is titled Bibliographic references.
- Particular care must be taken to provide the exact and complete registration of references. References should include full titles of books and journals (without abbreviations). Whenever available, include the DOI of the referenced publications. It is possible to easily consult if a reference has DOI by accessing the following web page: http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery. Searches can be done by entering one references or entering a block of them.
- Use only one font and type size: Times New Roman 12.
- No text identification.
- Line spacing: 1.5
- All abbreviations must be described the first time they are mentioned and used consistently throughout the text.
- Footnotes must be placed at the bottom of the page. The use of footnotes should be avoided, but when these are essential, they are required to be short and not used excessively.
- The number of tables, graphics and images should be reduced, including only those that are essential, but never exceeding a total of ten.
- Tables must be in APA format, without any vertical lines separating columns.
- All tables and graphs will be numbered correlatively, with Arabic numerals and must have a concise title that allows understanding the contents of the table or graph, as well as include their respective source, at the bottom, formatted according to the APA style.
- All tables, graphs and images must be referenced in the text.
- If previously published graphics or images are used, the authors will be responsible for obtaining copyright permission to be re-published.
- You must include in the submission each table, graphic or image in editable format (.pdf, .eps, or .xlsx).
- A file with a brief academic profile of each author (maximum 75 words) that includes: name, academic degree, institutional affiliation, research areas of interest, ORCID code and email. If you do not have an ORCID code yet, you can obtain it for free by accessing the web page: https://orcid.org/register.
- An anonymous file with the title, abstract, keywords and the full text of the article (with pictures and images inserted) and bibliographic references. Instructions to ensure an anonymous evaluation.
- Separate files of each graphic in editable format.
- Originality form filled and signed.

Checklist for submission preparation
As part of the submission process, the authors must verify that their submission meets all the requirements specified below. Submissions that do not comply with these guidelines will be returned to the authors.
About the Journal:
